The NYC soulful rock band continues its big year at one of the world’s premier running events
October 2015 – After appearing at their first ever CMJ Music Marathon this month, Eleventh Ward adds another first to their arsenal by being accepted to play along the route of the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon. Runners from around the country and around the globe far and wide come to compete and be a part of this illustrious event and now Eleventh Ward hopes to keep them in step along their journey.
Lead vocalist, Chris Saunders looks forward to the event: “This is just a great opportunity to support these amazing athletes throughout the day and put a little hop in their step while providing the spectators with something to jam out to while they’re waiting for their loved-ones to pass by. It should be a fun day.”
The marathon, which starts in Staten Island, the southernmost borough of New York City, stretches up to the Bronx before coming back down and finishing up in Central Park in the heart of Manhattan. The route will touch all five boroughs positioning the band smack in the middle of it all at about the half-way point (marker 20) of the marathon on the corner of Manhattan Avenue and Cayler Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
“There’s an electricity during the New York City Marathon. I love the energy in the city. From the different neighborhoods and from the people. It will be great to be out in the middle of it sharing our passion and rooting on the runners.” says drummer “Jett” Carter.
The 26.2 mile run has been described as a block party through the world’s most diverse city will give onlookers and visitors an opportunity to see all different parts of the city and discover its nooks and crannies. This particular neighborhood will satisfy those interested in the local Polish fare and of course New York’s famous pizza and Chinese food joints. For those who want to explore the city’s hidden underbelly, they can check out speakeasy, Brooklyn Safehouse. All of these are within a few blocks of the Eleventh Ward performance.
Transplanted Brooklynite and lead guitarist, Dmitry Willis talks about preparing for the marathon: “It’s been a crazy start to my time with Eleventh Ward. My first two shows were at Pianos and The Bitter End and now we’re performing in front of thousands of people for the New York City Marathon. And right in the borough that I now call home.”
Eleventh Ward was founded in 2010 when lead vocalist, Chris Saunders, began performing in NYC with his first show at, since shut down, Don Hills. The band has now grown from single performer to a 4-piece unit with great chemistry. There have been many different pieces throughout the years, but the current group consists of Chris Saunders, Ben Krupit, “Jett” Carter and Dmitry Willis.
Eleventh Ward will be playing on November 9th at Bowery Electric.
